To select the 100 best employers, FORTUNE collaborates with the Great Place to Work Institute to conduct the most exhaustive survey of US corporate employees. A total of 311 companies participated in the 2011 survey. The majority (2/3) of the scores for each company are based on a survey of trust measures conducted by the institute, which was sent to employees randomly selected by companies for answers. The survey questions involve employees’ creditworthiness with management, job satisfaction and their relationship with colleagues. Another third of the points came from companies responding to the Institute’s report on cultural audits, including detailed questions on pay and benefits plans and a series of open questions about hiring practices, internal communications, training, rewards programs and diversity efforts.
