美国总统林肯在1862年接见斯托夫人,说她“写了一部导致一场伟大战争的书。”这部书指的就是斯托夫人所写的《汤姆大伯的小屋》。起初,斯托夫人为了表达她对奴隶制的愤怒,秉笔直书,《汤姆大伯的小屋》以连载小说的方式在华盛顿的一家废奴主义刊物《民族时代》上连载了40多期,时间将近一年。在1852年一年之内,美国8家出版社赶印了30万册均销售一空。此后,欧洲大陆也竞相翻印,仅英国在一年内就印了150万册。该书在几年之内就被译成了22种语言。
In 1862, President Lincoln met with Mrs. Stowe and said that she “wrote a book that led to a great war.” This book refers to “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” written by Stowe. Initially, Mrs. Stowe, in order to express her anger at slavery, upheld more than 40 serials in a serial novels fictionalized over a series of more than 40 occasions in Washington’s abolitionist publication, The Ethical Times One year Within a year of 1852, the 300,000 copies printed by eight U.S. publishing houses were sold out. Since then, the European continent also competed for the reprint, only the UK printed 1.5 million copies in a year. The book was translated into 22 languages in a matter of a few years.
