A new report recently pointed out that zinc can prevent the deterioration of the plaque. Degeneration of the plaque is a major cause of senile vision loss and blindness in the eyes. In this regard, ophthalmologists are both excited and very cautious. Degeneration of the optic disc is an incurable disease that damages the optic nerve and pigment cells of the optic nerve, while the visual acuity is the center of the retina responsible for keen visualization such as reading. Dr David Newsom of the Louisiana State University Eye Center in New Orleans conducted a study of 151 cases. Eighty patients took twice-daily tablets containing 100 mg of zinc, whereas other patients took only one placebo. One to two years later, this group of patients taking zinc-containing pills showed very little vision loss and had almost no deleterious retinal changes. This is just a small study that can be poisoned by taking large amounts of zinc-containing tablets. Newsom and other ophthalmologists do not advocate increasing zinc intake. But this initial discovery “gives us confidence in further research,” Newsom said. At present, a larger study (600 to 1000 cases) is underway
