As a country with many earthquakes, as early as the Great Kanto Earthquake in 1923, Japan enacted laws requiring the construction of houses to calculate the degree of earthquakes. In 1995, the Earthquake Prevention Standards for Buildings, the Building Standards Act, was promulgated.
