16世纪之前,最令士兵恐惧的就是海上作战。茫茫大海上,一旦士兵得了重病或在交战时挂了重彩,其结果就同自己的战船被敌人击沉一样。唯一不同的是,前者是在船上等死,而后者是在海上等死。这种恐惧心理直至16世纪才被西班牙人打破。当时的西班牙是绝对的海上霸主,先进的造船技术让他们在大海上所向披靡,而唯一让西班牙海军头痛的,就是因伤病而造成的士兵减员。看到这种情况,国王很生气,舰长很着急,后果则是西班牙人研制出了世界上第一艘海上医疗船,从而拉开了专业海上医疗的大幕。
