Satellite communications and fiber optic communications have diametrically opposed capacity and distance economics and technology. Therefore, the advantages of both should be comprehensively utilized in the development of long-distance communications in our country. That is to say, satellite should be used firstly to meet the demand of our country’s smaller long-distance traffic, and then gradually transition to optical fiber or other large-capacity ground transmission as the traffic grows. Compared with the direct adoption of optical fiber system, this not only avoids the waste of transmission capacity in the early stage and saves a lot of investment, but also benefits the present and long-term development of China’s long-distance communication network. In this paper, a simplified economic mathematical model is used to calculate the economic benefits of using this satellite and optical fiber integrated development strategy. The optimal timing of satellite-to-optical fiber transition and the scope of application of this strategy are also analyzed.
