After Southwest Airlines started operating in 1971, it triggered a series of discussions on the low-cost operating model. In the mid-1990s, Ryanair also began replicating the idea of the Southwest China in Europe, when the industry was clear about the difference between low-cost and key airlines. Low-cost airlines operate second-tier airports, point-to-point routes, single-cabin layouts and short-haul routes, offering little or no on-board service, and a single model, basically starting with the B737. Network Airlines on the contrary, the operation hub - spoke structure route network, providing long-distance service, a wide range of models, providing high-end products and services on board. By the early 2000s, this very different distinction had changed, and the two different operating models were converging. Most low-cost carriers at least start offering some of the featured services. Mark Darby, vice president of Unisys, has said: For these airlines
