Some actors and actresses become arrogant when they get famous. The social environment fosters their arrogance. For instance, no matter what he or she does – bad or good – a movie star is still adored by his or her fans. Another weird phenomenon is that some producers and artists can still earn fat profits for critically notorious work. Such work is successful in the market, but what social benefits does it create?

Li Xuejian, born in 1954, now serves as vice president of China Federation of Literary and Art Circles (CFLAC). After a 40-year acting career, Li has received almost every movie and TV award on the Chinese mainland. In 2002, he won best supporting actor at the 50th Taiwan Golden Horse Awards for his performance in Back to 1942. Li excels at playing varied roles, and his dedicated attitude and low-profile character have won great acclaim in the industry.
There are no shortcuts to obtaining artistic expressiveness, which can only be achieved through honing their skills. A really excellent literary work must heighten readers’ spiritual awareness and inspire higher aims of goodness.

Tie Ning, a famous contemporary writer born in 1957, now serves as chair of Chinese Writers’ Association. Many of her works have been adapted to film and TV. The film Oh, Xiangxue, an adaptation of her novel, took the Youth Film Award at the 41st Berlin International Film Festival. Some of her works have been translated into English, French, German, Japanese, Russian, Spanish and Danish and have also been published in Hong Kong and Taiwan.
Tradition isn’t isolated from innovation, and classics aren’t out of fashion. In the new era, we [artists of traditional operas] should create theatrical works that better meet the needs of the modern audience.

Shang Changrong, a Peking Opera actor born in 1940, serves as president of the Chinese Theater Association. Shang created many new artistic models for Peking Opera and is a three-time winner of the Drama Plum Blossom Prize, the highest award of its kind in China. Shang is the sole winner of the Drama Plum Blossom Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2011, Shang was named World Opera Ambassador, a lifetime honor reserved for the most accomplished artists in the world by International Theatre Institute (ITI). In recent years, scandals and rumors have become so widespread in society that people can no longer distinguish right from wrong. The situation makes me uncomfortable like bitter wind. In the beginning, I thought this was a temporary phenomenon and just laughed it off. Gradually, I found such scandals gained popularity even among adolescents. We must take the phenomenon seriously and not let it continue.

Yan Su, born in 1930, is a renowned playwright and lyricist. Yan first became famous for his opera Sister Jiang, which premiered in 1964 and became a big hit. Consequently, Yan was even introduced to meet Mao Zedong. Later, he gradually waded into the entertainment circle, dubbing movies and TV shows. The lyrics he wrote for the popular TV series Journey to the West made him better known by the public. Since then, Yan has written numerous famous lyrics and modern Peking Operas.
Compared to the 1990s, fewer Chinese films now aim for winning prizes at international film festivals since China’s film market has witnessed a big, healthy development. For now, we should foster our domestic film market to improve Chinese confidence in domestic films.

People can now find various ways to immerse themselves in art, and Chinese artists and spectators are well acquainted with foreign art. I often ponder what our museum should do. We should provide greater cultural services to the public. Our museum is designed to serve artists. Back in the 1980s, we focused on boosting art creation. But now, our key task should be spreading aesthetic awareness in the public.

Fan Di’an, born in 1955, serves as president of the Central Academy of Fine Arts after recently resigned as president of National Art Museum of China (NAMOC). Since the 1980s, Fan has continuously engaged in promoting communication between Chinese and global arts. After he assumed presidency of NAMOC, Fan took advantage of the platform to promote contemporary art while continuing to display Chinese traditional classics, a practice which illuminated underground contemporary art for the public. A good writer should write from two standpoints: The first is the personal standpoint, which means a writer must be able to think and judge independently. The other is the standpoint of common people. A writer must have humanistic spirit and care about society.

Later he set up Feng Jicai Folk Culture Fund and China’s first Intangible Cultural Heritage Information Center, switching focus to protecting and rescuing endangered folk culture.
Culture represents the essential genes of a civilization. Once Chinese culture erodes, Chinese civilization passed down for millennia will also teeter on the verge of collapse. I sincerely appeal to all internet writers: Please do your best to spread the unique spirit and culture that inspires pride in China, as well as the core values of the Chinese civilization.
