The future of the British economy is now gloomier than at any time after the war. The jobless figure has now reached 444,000, equal to 2% of the workforce in the UK. In many areas, the percentage of unemployed people is still higher than the average of the country. In particular, the unemployment rate has exceeded 10% especially in parts of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. In 1952, when the number of unemployed exceeded current levels, the consumer goods industry, mainly the textile industry, was in serious condition.
