US Medical World News Vol. 22, No. 6, p. 68 (1981) Houston News: It is generally believed that a molecule similar to waste may actually have a protective effect against cancer. Bruce N Ames, a biochemist at the University of California, found that uric acid in the blood removes free radicals. He speculated that if free radicals were removed from the body before they had damaged DNA, free oxidation could stop the cancer. He reported at the International Oncology Symposium that plants in foodstuffs generate free radicals as a result of natural mutations or that they continue to generate free radicals by physiological reactions and radiation. Free radicals in DNA, when oxidized, can cause cross-linking of chains and other abnormalities and can therefore lead to mutations and development
