This article reviews the different reactions of the two major Australian political parties to the founding of New China over this major historical event and the differences between the two sides over how to deal with China over the next 22 years. The deep roots of these differences lie in the differences in philosophy and diplomatic tactics between the Labor Party of Australia and its major rival, the Liberal Party and the Village Party. In contrast with the one-sided anti-Chinese and anti-communist strategy of the Liberal Party and the Village Party, the Labor Party places greater emphasis on the importance of maintaining contact and cooperation with China. This has created favorable conditions for the Labor party’s future rule and the further development of bilateral relations.
