The modular multipurpose laser unit (MULE) is a tripod-mounted portable unit that was identified by Martin Corporation of the United States under simulated combat conditions at its open air combat training center. In the experiment, MULE successfully directed copperplate snake shells, laser-guided bombs and Haier-based laser-guided missiles. Martin aircraft equipped with a laser spot tracker position and identify the target indicated by the MULE operator as they fly over the desert base at low altitudes. In past experiments, MULE has successfully directed Martin’s laser-guided Maserhead missiles and naval shipboard 5 ”guided munitions. The MULE consists of three components, a laser pointer / rangefinder, North component and a stable target tracker (which is a versatile tripod).
