Yan Fu was a key figure in the continuous process of enlightenment in modern China. He was the pioneer and master of the Enlightenment in his day. The new Enlightenment symbolized by the “May Fourth” New Culture Movement, which debuted in 1916, most of the concepts it introduced were inherited from Yen Fu. Yan Fu’s late revaluation of Eastern and Western cultures, the value of democracy and science, as well as his criticism of the May Fourth Movement and the new culture did not mark the retrogression in Yen Fu’s thinking but showed two different concepts of enlightenment Paradigm differences. Specifically, Yan Fu’s thinking reflected the pursuit of the concept of wealthy and powerful in late Qing China, while the new enlightenment represented the pursuit of individual liberation of the intelligentsia in the Republic of China. Yan Fu regarded enlightenment as a long process of natural history and a reflection of the entire national spirit and individuality The new culture of “May Fourth Movement” raised the Enlightenment to compete for the discourse power of the intelligentsia, confronting ideological groups. Enlightenment was a serious journey of ideological and cultural exchange in Yen Fu, A deep level of academic discussion and input procedures, while in the “May Fourth” new culture there is a judgment of the right and wrong ideas and concepts and an ideological propaganda; Yan Fu’s enlightenment is based on more objective and neutralization The “New Culture of May Fourth Movement” places enlightenment in a critical nationalist position. However, on the whole, Yan Fu and “May Fourth” new culture are the opposite and complementarity under a common historical goal.
