蒋夫人在论定西安事变和平解决的功劳时曾说是“端纳首先打下基础，子文到来垒墙，夫人再来盖屋顶”，对孔祥熙只字未提，这是不公正的。西安事变中，孔祥熙任财政部长兼代理行政院长职务，他努力稳定金融秩序，为和平解决西安事变创造了安定的后方；他始终主张和平救蒋，抑制讨伐，并筹划了一个周密的“智取”方案，成为宋氏兄妹在西安和谈的坚实后盾。不可否认：若没有孔祥熙在南京的不懈努力，宋氏兄妹只能营造一座“空中楼阁”。
