At present, most deep wells and high-production wells are mostly complemented by open-hole completions because open-hole completion maximizes reservoir productivity. However, from the current technology point of view, the lack of effective reservoir sand control technology downhole. ExxonMobil has leading edge technology in this area to more accurately simulate downhole dynamics and provide downhole control during completion and production operations. Based on this initiative, early equipment development was based on the success of the AlternatePath and NAFPacSM gravel pack technologies to solve water channeling or gas channeling in open-hole wells and achieve multi-layer gravel pack completion. ExxonMobil partnered with third-party suppliers to design and implement new instrumentation and equipment to improve reservoir sealing, expand gravel packing, and simplify fieldwork. The process includes engineering design, part testing and full-scale model evaluation. The first application of the technology is scheduled for early 2008. This article describes the recently developed sand control screen equipment that enables true separation between layers in open-hole gravel packing. The device is capable of plugging bottom water, selectively completing or gravel filling target zones, enabling multi-level open-hole completions or isolating gas-bearing / water-bearing sands from production. The application of this technology can extend the life of the well, eventually increasing production and recoverable reserves.
