Carson McClus is the most influential southern female writer in the United States in the 20th century. One of McClelz’s most successful novels, The Songs of Sad Cafe borrows the form of popular Gothic novels of the 18th and 19th centuries, depicting a weird triangular love affair in a town in the South of the United States. In the novel, the heroine Amelia and the male protagonist Li Meng are in fact the image of hermaphrodite personality. Such an image does not have room for development and development in a male society with absolute right to speak. The heroine in the story, compared with Amelia and Li Meng, is a typical male representative of the image of the character. And Li Meng’s betrayal against Amelia, the fight between Marvin and Li Meng and Amelia is precisely the control and exclusion of the male-dominated society represented by Li Meng. In the patriarchal society, androgyny is “other ”. In the end, when Amelia was beaten down and collapsed, Li Meng’s abandonment of her past and follow-up of Marvin also meant the disillusionment of hermaphrodites in the patriarchal society: either beaten down, sluggish, or assimilated to give up oneself.
