柴油机气缸垫的作用是持久而可靠地保持密封作用。必须严格密封气缸内所产生的高温高压气体和贯穿气缸垫的具有一定压力和流速的冷却水以及机油，并能经受住水、气、油的腐蚀。但在使用过程中，由于使用、安装及修理不当，往往会发生烧损气缸垫的故障。若气缸垫烧损较严重，停车后冷却水易从烧损处漏入气缸，下一次起动时，将导致排气管排水和冒白烟。造成烧损气缸垫的主要原因及应采取的修理方法，有以下几方面：
