OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of flexible intramedullary nailing on the functional recovery of patients with fractures of the forearm in children. Methods: From 1990 to 2011, 90 cases of displaced forearm fractures in children, including 8 open fractures and 77 double forearm fractures. All methods were used or open reduction, flexible intramedullary nailing, and followed up an average of 6.6 months. Results: All fractures healed, healing time average 2.9 months. The functional evaluation was excellent or good in 76 cases (84%). Complications included 8 wound-related complications, 1 case of superficial radial nerve paralysis, 1 case of malunion and 1 case of post-operative compartment syndrome. There was no significant difference between fracture healing rate and fracture site in children. CONCLUSIONS: Elastic intramedullary nails technique is an easy-to-use and prognostic treatment for children with forearm fractures.
