Objective: To investigate the impact of body mass index (BMI) on the weight of newborns. Methods: 469 maternal pre-pregnancy body mass index (BMI) and whole body mass index (△ BMI) were measured retrospectively from January 2006 to June 2007 in our hospital. Impact on newborn weight. Results: The chances of giving birth to a huge child in high BMI group were higher than those in normal BMI group and low BMI group. The pregnant women in low BMI group had a significantly higher chance of giving birth to a child younger than gestational age than the normal group. When △ BMI> 6, the probability of delivering a huge fetus was significantly increased (P <0.05). When △ BMI <4, the chances of giving birth to a child younger than gestational age were significantly higher than those in the normal group. CONCLUSIONS: Abnormal changes in body mass index during pregnancy have a significant effect on newborn weight.
