江总历梁、陈、隋三代,他因“狎客”之名和身仕三朝的经历在后世饱受争议;也因遭逢乱世阅尽沧桑为后人所喟叹。后世诗人咏及江总,常以其宅邸为凭吊对象,“江总宅”成为意蕴丰富的诗歌意象。“江总宅”作为文人庭院的代表,是优雅闲适、诗酒风流的文人生活的象征。另一方面,它又饱含了感慨时空转换、世事沧桑的深沉意蕴。与其他历史遗迹相比,“江总宅”融合了江总的身世行迹,突出了个体身处巨大的世事变迁中的渺小与无奈,极易引发身处易代之际的后世文人的强烈共鸣,是其六朝情结的突出表现。
