Before Shanghai opened, there were no foreigners. Although many foreigners have been to Shanghai, the war ended and they were withdrawn as the war shifted. After the opening of ports, foreigners came one after another. By 1910, the number of foreigners living in Shanghai had exceeded 15,000. However, during the entire late Qing period from 1843 to 1911, the growth of the population of Shanghai’s foreigners did not grow naturally, nor did it continue its rapid growth. Rather, it grew, rose, and descended, showing a clear stage in the ups and downs : First, the period of slow growth (1843-1853) In the early days of the opening of the port, the overseas Chinese separated from each other and the population in the northern part of the city was sparsely populated. The growth rate of foreigners was relatively slow. By the end of 1843, the total number of aliens registered with the British Consulate was 26, all of whom were British, including consular staff, foreign firms, and missionaries. Since then, the number of aliens increased year by year. In the British Concession (including the early United States concession), there were 50 persons in 1844 (all but 1 British and several expatriates abroad), 90 in 1845, 120 in 1846 and 18 in 1847 134 (of whom 87 were English), 159 in 1848 (of which 7 were women), 175 in 1849,
