由于苗族没有文字,他们以服饰为容器,以针线为媒介,以图案为“语言,”将本民族的悠久的历史和灿烂的文化乃至爱与恨都绣在衣服上,镌刻在心里,针针线线都浸透着这个民族太多的情感,与其说他们是在绣衣服,不如说他们是在叙写着厚重的历史,记载着不朽的文明,倾诉着千年的情感。正是由于苗族服装这种“语言”的功能以及寄寓的情感以及对本民族语言极其一切标志的维护心理和态度,苗族服装才会呈现出其他民族特别是汉族服装少有的“规则性,”才会成为文化的表征,情感寄托的载体。
