The premotor neurons of the pharyngeal muscle are located in the nucleus of the solitary tract (NTS)and the adjacent reticular formation, but the chemical characteristic of these premotor neurons is unknown. Using pseudorabies virus (PRV) and somatostatin (SOM) immunofluorescence double labeling method, the PRV and SOM double labeling neurons were found in the interstitial, intermediate, and rostral medial subnucleus of the NTS and semicompact part of nucleus ambiguus (NA). The function of these SOM-like neurons in the premotor neurons of pharyngeal muscle is nuclear. It may concern with the modulation of the varied activities of the pharyngeal muscle.
