A routing protocol based on geographic information system (GBRP) is proposed for vehicle ad hoc networks to solve the problem of path reconstruction caused by nodes moving at high speed. Due to the use of road space information extracted from geographic information system, this protocol can avoid the fixed or temporary topological holes in the vehicle self-organizing network in urban environment. The simulation results show that the new routing protocol has higher packet transmission rate, lower routing overhead and better protocol scalability than DSR, which is more suitable for in-vehicle communication in urban environment.
