本论文将把剧情片、纪录片与戏剧在本质特点和媒介特点层面进行横向对比。但重点仍然会放在剧情片,纪录片根据创作者创作手法的不同,也会引入“戏剧性”这一因素,因此说,电影艺术与戏剧是同胞兄弟,这种定位揭示出戏剧与电影既有共同特点又具备相互独立的特色,在艺术门类的归属上,戏剧中有舞剧,并不影响舞蹈作为独立艺术存在,戏剧中有音乐剧,同样并不影响音乐成为一门独立艺术!在戏剧中,起码可以把剧情电影划归到亚戏剧的门类下。纪录片不是戏剧,但纪录片本身并不是电影的全部,不足以支撑电影成为一门独立的艺术,也许电影的发展还不够完善,也许目前只能给电影这样的定义:电影是一种带有戏剧特色的、主动自觉运用光影幻觉来表现运动的视听艺术,既与音乐、舞蹈、绘画等艺术门类有交融,有待成为一门独立的艺术形式。
