和其他女性作家一样,玛利亚·埃奇沃思一直被遗忘在父权文化的历史长河中。她的作品在国内至今几乎无人论及。《贝琳达》是埃奇沃思的代表作之一,讲述了贝琳达·泊特曼在英国伦敦社交界寻找幸福婚姻的过程中如何实现建构自己理想的性别形象的故事。小说展示并审视了父权文化下四种不同类型的女性形象建构:“悍妇”、“激进女权主义者”、“家庭天使”以及“玩偶”。而通过对这四种女性形象建构的审视总结,埃奇沃思为贝琳达建构了不同的具有独立和理性的女性形象,并以此展示了自己对于女性形象建构的独特看法。
Like other female writers, Maria Edgewood has long been forgotten in the long history of patriarchal culture. Her work has hardly been discussed in China so far. Belinda, one of Edgeworth’s masterpieces, tells the story of how Belinda Poetman realized how to construct his own idealized gender image in the search for a happy marriage in London’s London community. The novel shows and examines the construction of four different types of female images under the patriarchal culture: “Slammer”, “radical feminist”, “family angel” and “doll”. Through the review of the construction of these four kinds of female images, Edgeworth constructs different independent and rational female images for Belinda and demonstrates her own unique view of the female image construction.
