当刘鹗(1857—1909)在本世纪的头十年中写作举世闻名的小说《老残游记》时,中国的小说正处于将被人们看成是严肃而又体面的艺术的阶段。自古以来对于虚构的故事采取轻视的态度依然十分明显,有迹象表明,刘鹗本人在某种程度上也持有这种态度。他的儿子刘大绅证实,他写书是凭一时的兴致,并无宏图大志,且隐姓埋名,既不关心他的著作会获得巨大的成功,也决没有预期会获得成功。此外,刘鹗恐怕从来没有校阅他写的文字,只是在发表之后才第二次着手写之。
When Liu Yong (1857-1909) wrote the world-famous novel “Travel Notes to the West” in the first decade of this century, Chinese novels are at a stage where they will be regarded as serious and decent art. Since ancient times the fictional story to take a contemptuous attitude is still very obvious, there are signs that Liu Yong, to some extent, also hold this attitude. His son, Liu Gentry, confirmed that his writing was based on his own spirits for the time being, with no ambitious ambitions and an anonymity, neither concerned about the tremendous success of his work nor his expectation of success. In addition, Liu Huan probably never read the text he wrote, only published it for the second time after writing.
