The properties of lithium niobate crystals are summarized and their dependence on the actual composition of the crystals is demonstrated.The chemical bond model is used to quantitatively explain the origin of this dependence and thus the key factors that constrain the improvement of the properties of the crystals It is defect control in crystal structure.
