Hu Tsung-nan, a graduate of Whampoa I, is one of Chiang Kai-shek’s most trusted military generals. When commanding and directing the occupation of Yan’an in 1947, Hu Zongnan became the “Northwest King”, a lieutenant general who commands hundreds of thousands of troops and commands several corps. During the decades of the Kuomintang-Communist war, Hu Tsung-nan became one of the most opponents of the Chinese communists. With the collapse of the ice sheets of the Kuomintang government, he also quickly plummeted from the summit, and retreated to Xichang from northern Shaanxi. Hundreds of thousands of troops collapsed and eventually became the symbolic figure in the Kuomintang defeat. After arriving in Taiwan, Hu Tsung-nan became marginalized until his depression finally ended. Hu Zongnan’s second son, Hu Wei Shan, is the vice president of Chung Yuan Christian University in Taiwan. When he was young, he spent his special time with his father.
