The US Army Corps of Engineers Portland North Pacific Division is currently building a new lock (see Figure 3 on the back cover) at the Bonneville Hydroelectric Project, the most downstream level on the Columbia River, to replace the old lock built in 1938. The size of the new ship lock is 205.74m long, 26.5m wide and 5.79m deep on the threshold. The maximum head of the ship lock is 21.4m. The largest design fleet is 198.12m long, 25.6m wide and 4.27m maximum draft. The planned freight volume is 1300 ~ 3000 × 10 ~ 4t. The lock has been excavated in July 1987 and the sluice gate is planned to be completed in September 1989. The concrete construction will start in January 1990 and the main construction was completed in 1992 and put into operation in April 1992.
