The “liar’s costume show” is a long forgotten part of Melville’s novel. This article attempts to reveal Melvill’s core and essence of Christianity - the irony of faith, hope and love, by illustrating Melville’s parody of “the New Testament and the corinthians” in The Lost Costumes The question of God’s existence, at the same time, reveals Melville’s religious disillusionment in “The Second Growth”.
