Four years after Cisco's chief technology executive was vacant, Charles Giancarlo sat down on the seat. Giancarlo is not an expert technologist. In addition to being a vice president of marketing, he has enthusiastically participated in Cisco's 18 acquisitions and 20 project investments. Giancarlo's expression does not over-show the carefulness of technical experts, but more commercial marketing terms. However, he still claims to be the most suitable candidate for chief technology officer. On the technical side, Zhankarol was involved in developing the first asynchronous transfer mode product and applying for a patent, and in the market he has also been working to get the Cisco brand recognized by enterprise customers of all sizes. He told BusinessWeek: “Companies need both business and technology, and the chief technology officer can only succeed if it accurately predicts the change in technology trends and transforms it into real-world business.”
