The differentiation of a freshman is a common concern in education. We investigated 1601 students in 30 teaching classes from the first day to the third day of some high schools in downtown Guangzhou and suburban counties and found that the differentiation of the first two students mainly manifested in two aspects: (1) the differentiation of academic achievements. The survey we conducted on student achievement was carried out in June 1984 and can only be based on the total average scores of all the subjects in the period. Of the ten secondary schools surveyed, there were seven at the first grade and three at the slightly improved grade. According to the survey results of four high schools in the city by 1981, Zhang Huaijiang and other comrades also indicated that the passing rate of eight exams in one middle school is 46.5% on the second grade and 69.3%
