“Father’s Smiling Light” is the representative work of the famous black feminist Alice Walker. The novel is based on the black family and expresses the author’s concern for black women by describing the stories of two black sisters. Pauline is a distinctively black woman in the novel. In her novels, she shows hermaphrodite, mother, multiple “gender” identities such as “males”. In her works, Walker shifts from heterosexuals to homosexuals In the switch of identity, she expressed that she wanted to use her identity exercises to try to find a main body identity that best suits women and has completed the resistance against the current sexual order. Surveying Pauline under the theory of gender exercises found that she has multiple identities that fit the gender identity as defined by Judith Butler’s theoretical definition of gender.
