[Objective] To understand the correlation between overweight, obesity and life satisfaction, depression, anxiety and self-awareness of junior high school students. [Methods] A total of 1818 primary and secondary school students from a middle school in Quxian County were enrolled in this study. The scale of life satisfaction of multidimensional students, depression scale, trait anxiety scale and self-awareness scale of children with epidemiological investigation center and their corresponding evaluation criteria Mental health assessment, while height and weight measurements, body mass index (BMI) values. The Chinese children and adolescents were stratified according to the BMI value of overweight and obesity screening. The differences of mental health between male and female students with normal weight, overweight and obesity were analyzed, and the correlation between BMI and 4 scores of boys and girls was analyzed. [Results] The prevalence of overweight and obesity in boys was significantly higher than that of girls (21.5% and 7.7%) (8.0% and 2.8%, respectively). There was a statistically significant difference in gender satisfaction between life satisfaction scores of normal weight group (P = 0.002) and gender differences in overweight group depression score (P = 0.046). Among girls, there were significant differences in depression, trait anxiety and self-awareness scores between normal weight group, overweight group and obese group (P <0.05), while depression and anxiety scores of obese group were significantly higher than those of normal weight group (P = 0.012 And P = 0.035). The score of self-awareness in obesity group was lower than that of normal weight group (P = 0.014), and the depression score of overweight group was higher than that of normal weight group (P = 0.025). [Conclusion] The prevalence of overweight and obesity in girls was lower than that of boys, but the differences between the mental health status of overweight and obese girls and normal weight of girls were more obvious than that of boys.
