According to a study published in the March 1998 issue of the Journal of Clinical Nutrition, pregnant women in the late stages of pregnancy are more likely to transfer vitamin E to the placenta than to synthetic vitamin E. In the study, the researchers asked 15 pregnant women to take natural and synthetic vitamin E deuterium labeled doses of 15 to 300 mg daily for 5 to 9 days prior to delivery. The concentration of natural vitamin E in the mother’s blood during childbirth is nearly twice as high as that of synthetic vitamin E. The concentration of natural vitamin E in the umbilical cord of the placenta is almost 3.5 times higher than that of synthetic vitamin E, and these two findings are not related to the given dosages.
