He devoted his life to the translation and study of ancient Chinese and Japanese books, including poetry, fiction, Ci Fu and Variations His translation of The Book of Songs, The Analects of Confucius, Tao Te Ching, and The Tale of Genji have long been translation masterpieces. His translated ancient Chinese poems are even selected as contemporary English poetry anthologies. His literary biography written by three Chinese poets, namely Li Bai, Bai Juyi and Yuan Mei, is also well-known. His translations and writings have greatly enhanced the English world for Chinese history and culture
