日本文化被认为是东西方文化并存和混合的产物。许多人认为其文化特征是“杂交文化”。日本很好地吸收了外来的先进文化和知识,并且保留了自己独特的传统文化,是多种文化并存的国家,每当处于重大历史转折时期,都能够为适应自身的要求,有目的性而又有选择性地吸收外来文化,并且加以融合创新,最终形成日本本民族特有的文化。宗教方面也是如此,大多数日本人既信奉佛教又信奉神道。
