By changing the way some organisms process sugars, UCLA researchers demonstrate how to make more fuel. Researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) have genetically engineered the way some organisms process sugars, opening up a path to cheaper, cleaner biofuels. Traditional biofuels are either too expensive to compete with fossil fuels or emit too much carbon dioxide that is not worth producing, or both. This progress at UCLA has resulted in a 50% increase in biofuel production from sugar, which allows us to produce biofuels cheaper from biomass, especially from sawdust and grasses.
