The UK Energy White Paper recommends increasing the share of renewable energy to 20% by 2020. Increasing the share of renewable energy is bound to add some extra costs. The article assumes that all renewable energy power comes from wind energy, identifying and calculating additional costs to consumers, so that the intermittent effects of wind energy can be studied. The additional costs include increased power generation costs, additional balancing costs and increased costs for power transmission and distribution systems, with a clear explanation of the underlying assumptions. Comparing the total cost under two hypothetical scenarios, one hypothesis is that 20% of the electricity comes from wind energy and the other assumption is that the total electricity generation comes from natural gas generation. The conclusion shows that wind power accounts for a large proportion of the electricity supply without any technical obstacles.
