One hundred years ago, type 2 diabetes was also seen as a rare disease, but its incidence has exploded in recent years. Approximately 16 million Americans have type 2 diabetes and have at least the same number of impaired glucose tolerance. China is a major diabetic country with an estimated 40 million existing diabetics and more than 90% with type 2 diabetes. 80% of diabetic patients die of coronary heart disease. Insulin resistance and hyperinsulinemia are not only type 2 diabetes but also a hallmark of people with impaired glucose tolerance. These metabolic disorders, often associated with hypertension and dyslipidemia, occur in people with type 2 diabetes and impaired glucose tolerance and significantly increase the risk of cardiovascular disease, peripheral vascular disease and cerebrovascular disease.
