Singapore is the only multi-ethnic country in Southeast Asia that is predominately Chinese. Maintaining ethnic harmony and social stability are the key areas for the local government’s administration. The Singapore government has adopted different public and social policies to raise the national awareness and national identity of the local people. The more important are the implementation of the national service system, the racial integration policy of public housing, and the strengthening of local history education curricula to coordinate with the implementation of the National Education Plan Policy. Through a review of the historical development of Singapore since its independence in 1965, this article explores the role of history education as a core part of the local national education plan for maintaining the Singapore government’s political development and social stability.
