Based on historical data, this paper discusses the causes of flooding in the Taihu Lake region between Song and Song Dynasties, the retreat of the northern Jiangsu Plain and the coastline along the Hangzhou Bay, and suggests that the background of this environmental change is the sea level rise. The Northern Expedition to the Yellow River and the southward shift of the hydrodynamic axis of the Yangtze Estuary during the Northern Song Dynasty were also the result of rising sea levels. In the early Northern Song Dynasty (from the middle of the 10th century) to the middle of the Southern Song Dynasty (early 13th century) sea level rise was about 1.5-2 meters, with the highest sea level about 1 meter higher than the modern sea level.
