黄玉雪的《华女阿五》被认为是一部成功塑造了生活在美国的模范少数族裔形象的自传作品。小说描写了华人移民后代“玉雪”实现美国梦的过程,展现了少数族裔女性摆脱旧的文化传统、勇敢追求个性独立,宣扬了美国的民主理想和个人主义精神,因而受到美国主流社会的推崇和肯定。但是,由于作者采用了第三人称叙述手法,使小说呈现出含混、冲突、自相矛盾的特征,成了一部“有裂缝的自传”。
Wong’s “Hua Nv Ah Wu” is considered to be an autobiographical piece that succeeded in shaping the model minority living in the United States. The novel describes the process by which the Chinese immigrants’ offspring ’Jade Snow ’ realize the American dream. It shows that ethnic minority women get the mainstream from the United States by breaking away from their old cultural traditions, bravely pursuing individual independence, and promoting the democratic ideals and individualism of the United States Social respected and affirmed. However, since the author adopts the third-person narrative technique, the novel presents a vague, contradictory and contradictory characteristic and becomes a “cracked autobiography.”
