There have been numerous articles describing the current refining technology and the impact of visbreaking and catalytic cracking on the properties of marine residuals. To put it in a nutshell: At present, diesel engine oil residues provided in some places have one or more of the characteristics close to the threshold (see Table 1). Residual oil for boiler applications (boiler oil) may be even worse in character. In order to know in advance the changes in the quality of residual oil, Sulzer decided to conduct extensive research on fuel purification systems and fuels whose selected properties meet or exceed the present limits.
