Objective: To observe the therapeutic effect of acupuncture combined with massage for neurasthenia. Methods: A total of 88 cases of neurosism outpatients were randomly divided into acu(puncture)-massage group (n=58) and medication group (n=30). In acu-massage group, scalp-points as Dingzhongxian (顶中线MS 5), Ezhongxian (额中线MS 1), Zhenshang Zhengzhongxian (枕上正中线 MS 12), etc, and body acupoints Taiyang (太阳EX-HN 5), Yintang (印堂EX-HN 3), Shanzhong (膻中CV 17), etc. acupoints were punctured, followed by performing massage from Yintang (EX-HN 3) to Shenting (神庭GV 24) and to the superciliary arch and Taiyang (EX-HN 5), etc. for 6-9 times. The treatment was conducted once daily with 10 times being a therapeutic course. In medication group, the patients were asked to take Alprazolam (0.4 mg, t.i.d. in the 1st 10 days; 0.8 mg, t.i.d. thereafter), etc. Results: Following 3 courses of treatment, of the 58 and 30 cases in acu-massage and medication groups, 22 (37.93%) and 8 (26.67%) were cured, 18 (31.63%) and 11 (36.37%) had marked improvement in clinical symptoms, 16 (27.59%) and 4 (13.33%) had improvement, 2 (3.45%) and 7 (23.33%) failed, with the total effective rates being 96.55% and 76.67% respectively. Three months after treatment, follow-up showed that of the 40 and 19 cases in acu-massage and medication groups, 2 (5.0%) and 4 (21.1%) relapsed separately. Conclusion: The therapeutic effect of acupuncture combined with massage is markedly superior to that of medication in relieving neurosism.
