Objective To investigate the distribution of canine sympathetic nerve endings in the atrium and pulmonary veins and its relationship with atrial fibrillation. Methods 16 healthy mongrel dogs, general anesthesia, left and right thoracotomy. Stimulation of bilateral vagal sympathetic dry, respectively, right atrial appendage, left atrial appendage, left atrium and four pulmonary veins S_1S_1 burst stimulation and S_1S_2 program to stimulate the atrial and pulmonary venous in different parts of atrial fibrillation induction rate. Subsequently, the animals were sacrificed, the atria and pulmonary venous sympathetic nuclei were stained with anti-tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) antibody to calculate the sympathetic nerve density in various parts of the atrium and pulmonary veins, and the relationship between sympathetic densities and the induction of atrial fibrillation was compared. Results All dogs completed all the tests. In addition to the lower right atrium pulmonary venous atrial fibrillation induced rate was low, the remaining parts of atrial fibrillation induced rate was no significant difference; atrial and atrial appendage TH-positive neuronal density were higher than the pulmonary vein density [(128 ± 65) / mm ~ 2, (76 ± 29) / mm ~ 2, P = 0.02]. The TH-positive neuronal density of dogs that could induce atrial fibrillation was higher than that of the non-atrial fibrillation group (P> 0.05). Conclusion The distribution of sympathetic nerves in the atrium and atrial appendage is greater than that of the sympathetic nerves in the pulmonary veins. There is a certain relationship between the atrial fibrillation and the density of the sympathetic nerves in the atria and pulmonary veins.
