In the late 1980s and early 1990s, there was a “public journalism” campaign in the American press. This article argues that the “public journalism” movement in the United States is not only a measure taken to reduce the credibility of the U.S. news media, but is also a panic over the gradual decline of American democracy. This trend of thought is actually also an integral part of the thinking of the 90s in reflecting on the crisis and legitimation of the late capitalist democracy. The publication of public journalism reflects that the media is trying to save democracy and is also the self-redemption of the U.S. media.
