在中国传统文人的精神世界中,“笔墨”不仅仅代表一种材料、一种技法,更有着深厚久远的文化积淀和精神内涵。中国传统士大夫的人格修养在笔墨中得到升华,其精神世界在笔墨中得到寄托。笔墨与中国传统文人的生活可以说密切相关。但在当今,面对一日千载的时代和生活节奏,面对在极大程度上改变了我们信息传递和交流方式的媒介环境,“笔墨”似乎显得不是那么重要了。可问题在于,当今有大量坚持笔墨语言的艺术家在从事绘画创作,他们也是当代艺术中极其活跃的一个群体。他们对于笔墨的理解及其表现,将在极大程度上影响着“笔墨”这种传统媒材的现实与未来。那么,笔墨是否还能够表现我们的时代生活?在当今的社会,传统的笔墨又在扮演着怎样的时代角色?
