Of all the known substances in the world, diamonds are the hardest. It was crystallized from carbonized material millions of years ago. Diamonds are measured in “carats”. “Carat” comes from “bean pods” in Arabic. Because the shape of “bean pods” is the same as diamonds, ancient stone merchants use “bean pods” to weigh diamonds. A diamond weighing two carats is worth more than two diamonds of the same quality and weighing one carat. The most precious diamond is colorless. Most round polished diamonds typically have 58 facets, and the more facets diamonds can reflect more light and thus shine.
